バリアンメディカルシステムズ（Varian Medical Systems、NYSE: VAR）は10日、日本の厚生労働省からProBeam陽子線システム※を日本で販売する認可を受けたと発表した。この承認は、がん患者にとって高度治療のオプションとして陽子線治療への関心が世界中で高まっていることを示す最新の事例である。バリアンはProBeamシステムを2017年5月11日から13日に横浜で開催の第56回国際粒子線治療共同グループ（Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group、PTCOG）年次大会で展示する。

バリアンのProBeamシステムは、初めて完全に統合された強度変調陽子線治療（IMPT）が可能であり、より効率的な適応陽子線治療を実現する。バリアンのペンシルビーム・スキャニング技術により臨床医は腫瘍への線量を精密に管理し、正常な組織に対する線量を最小限にできる。コーンビームコンピューター断層撮影法（CBCT）との組み合わせで、ProBeamシステムは治療の過程で高度な画像誘導適応治療を可能とし、より正確な陽子線治療を実現する。

陽子線治療では正常な組織への障害と潜在的な副作用のリスクが低減する。これは陽子線が患者を通過する部分すべてに照射されるのではなく、腫瘍患部にエネルギーが正確に当たるよう制御されることに起因する。この治療法は小児がんのみならず成人のがんにも有効と考えられている。

Varian ProBeam Proton Therapy System Receives Shonin Approval

Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR) today announced it has received Shonin

approval from the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) to

market the ProBeam(R) system for proton therapy in Japan. This approval is the

latest example of the growing worldwide interest in proton therapy as an

advanced treatment option for cancer patients. Varian will be showcasing the

ProBeam system at the Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group (PTCOG), May 11-13,

2017 in Yokohama, Japan.

Varian's ProBeam system is the first to offer fully-integrated intensity

modulated proton therapy (IMPT) to enable more efficient adaptive proton

therapy. Varian's pencil beam scanning technology gives clinicians the ability

to deliver the dose precisely in the tumor to minimize dose to healthy tissue.

When combined with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), the ProBeam system

enables advanced image-guided adaptive therapy during the course of treatment

helping to make it the most precise form of proton therapy available.

With proton therapy, the risk of damage to healthy tissues and potential side

effects are reduced because proton beams can be controlled so that they deposit

their energy within the tumor site rather than passing all the way through the

patient. The treatment is particularly suitable for pediatric cancer cases as

well as for adults.
