国際レジャースポーツ大会は、春川を観光、レジャーのメッカにするのに役立つ

新しい競技やビジター向けのプログラムとともに同日始まった第5回春川国際レジャースポーツ大会（Chuncheon International Leisure Sports Festival）は、8月15日（月曜）まで開催された。

春川のチェ・ドンヨン市長は聯合ニュースとのインタビューで「大会を成功裏に開催することによって、われわれはビジターに春川をレジャー観光の最高の場所として考える機会を提供する」と語った。チェ氏は大会の組織委員会の委員長を務めている。

「この目的を達成するため、われわれは国内イベントと国際イベントを交互に繰り返しながら、1年ごとに隔年行事を開催することを決定した」

大会の開催地は、ソウルの北東85キロメートルにある韓国北東部の江原道の都市、春川の松岩スポーツタウン（Songam Sports Town）である。内外31カ国の選手約5000人がもてなしを受ける。

2010年に始まった同大会は、春川を韓国トップのレジャー観光都市として振興することを目的としている。美しい衣岩湖のあるこの都市は、レジャースポーツを体験したい人々を呼び込もうと努めている。

同イベントのための同市の予算計画について聞かれたチェ氏は、同市は規模よりも内容に重点を置く努力の一環として今年の大会予算を2014年より30%削減し、19億ウォン（約170万米ドル）にしたと語った。このため、組織委員会はドローンレースやエクストリームキックのような人気のある国際イベントを選んだ。

今年の大会は14のスポーツイベント（5つは国際イベント、9つは国内イベント）を開催した。主催者は、エクストリームキックとドローンレースが初めて国際イベントに加えられたと語った。その他の3つの国際競技は国際アクションスポーツ選手権、世界ラテンダンス大会、エアソフト・サバイバル大会である。

市長は「市の予算が注入されている同大会は、地元経済を強化するのに貢献すべきである。地元企業の再活性化は、この大会のためにわれわれがいかに多くのビジターを確保できるかにかかっている」と語った。

ビジターの数を増やすため、組織委員会は、ビジターが自発的に体験できるプログラムの範囲を拡大した。国内イベントでは、3対3バスケットボール・トーナメント、RCカー・オフロード選手権、「マックスパワー・ドリフト・マッスル」（Maxpower Drift Muscle）と名付けられたカー・ドリフト競争が同大会でデビューした。

ビジターには、大会史上最大となる26のイベントが用意された。

ビジターは90メートルのウオータースライドを下り、ウオーターガン・バトルに参加し、カヤックに乗り、ボートやヨットをこぐことができた。さらに、無料のアイスホッケー講義、スーパーカー展示会、Kポップ・コンサート、ダンス演技もあった。

熱気球乗りなどの一部のプログラムは、予約が始まった日にチケットが売り切れており、大成功だった。同大会は一部の練習試合や予選で始まる一方、開会式は13日夜に開催され、Kポップのアイドル・グループによる公演や花火大会が行われた。

チェ氏は、複数の人造湖で知られる同市により多くの観光客を呼び込むため、同大会のスポーツ活動を同市が所有する観光資源と結び付けることの重要性を強調した。同市役所は、同市の湖が近くで見えるスカイウォーク、玩具ロボットのホール、著名な韓国の小説家、金裕貞にちなむ村などの観光アトラクションを完成させている。

チェ氏は「ビジターが大会に参加するだけでなく、近くにあるこれらの観光アトラクションも訪れるなら、春川は、観光が活性化し、国際的な観光地として新しく変化するイメージを得るだろう。最終的には、ゲームの名前が選手や一般の人々をレジャーやスポーツの活動のために春川を訪れるようにさせる」と語った。

次の数少ない大会（来年の国内大会と2018年の国際大会）を市長がどのように準備するかについて、チェ氏は「レジャー産業の傾向から判断し、その中の新たな変化を理解することによって、われわれは次の大会のためにしっかりと準備する。中・長期的な観点からは、レジャー活動と観光活動を合わせて効果的に提供するためのプロジェクトが実施されるべきである」と語った。

市長はまた「われわれが春川をレジャーと観光の最高の都市にしようとしている理由の一つは、同市が湖と川と山に取り囲まれているため、水と陸と空の分野のレジャー活動に最も適した自然環境に恵まれているということである」と語った

レジャー活動は日常生活に欠くことのできないものになりつつあり、春川はレジャー市場において高い成長の可能性を持っている。市長は「われわれは、春川が観光と大会を結び付けることによって付加価値を創出するビッグプレーヤーになることを望んでいる」と語った。

同市は、レゴランドやハローキティ・テーマパーク、三岳山のロープウェーが運営を始める2018年以降は、より多くの観光客を獲得するための多くの施設を持つと期待している。

チェ氏は「春川の将来像は観光と自然である。二つの分野をまとめるのはレジャーである」と語った。

International Leisure Sports Festival Helps Catapult Chuncheon Into Tourism, Leisure Mecca

The mayor of Chuncheon expressed hope on last Friday that hosting an

international leisure sports festival will help catapult the city into the

position of a mecca of tourism and leisure activities for domestic and foreign

visitors.

The fifth edition of the Chuncheon International Leisure Sports Festival, which

kicked off the same day with new competitions and programs for visitors, had

run until August 15, last Monday.

"By successfully holding the festival, we will offer visitors opportunities to

think of Chuncheon as a top location for leisure and tourism," Chuncheon Mayor

Choi Dong-yong said in an interview with Yonhap News Agency. Choi serves as the

chief of the festival's organizing committee.

"To achieve the objective we have decided to hold the biennial event on an

annual basis, alternating between domestic and international events."

The festival's venue is the Songam Sports Town in Chuncheon, a city in South

Korea's northeast province of Gangwon which sits 85 kilometers northeast of

Seoul. It will play host to some 5,000 local and foreign athletes from 31

countries.

The festival, which first started in 2010, aims to promote Chuncheon as the

nation's top leisure and tourism city. With its beautiful Uiam Lake, the city

has been trying to attract people who like to experience leisure sports.

Asked about the city's budget plan for the event, Choi said the municipality

has trimmed this year's festival budget by 30 percent from 2014 to 1.9 billion

won (about US$1.7 million) as part of its efforts to focus on substance rather

than size. Because of this, the organizing committee has singled out popular

international events such as drone racing and extreme kicking.

This year's festival has featured 14 sports events -- five international and

nine local. The organizers said extreme kicking and drone racing have been

added to the international events for the first time. The other three

international competitions are the International Actions Sports Championship,

World Latin Dance Festival and Airsoft Survival Festival.

"The festival into which the city's budget is poured should contribute to

boosting the local economy," the mayor said. "Revitalizing local businesses is

up to how many visitors we will be able to secure for this festival."

In order to increase the number of visitors, the organizing committee has

expanded the scope of programs that visitors can experience spontaneously. For

domestic events, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, an RC car off-road

championship and a car drift competition named "Maxpower Drift Muscle" had made

their debut in the festival.

26 events were offered to visitors, the largest in the festival's history.

Visitors could go down a 90-meter water slide, participate in a water gun

battle, and ride kayaks, paddle boats and yachts. In addition, there were a

free ice hockey lecture, a supercar exhibition, K-pop concerts and dance

performances.

Some programs like hot air balloon rides were a hit as tickets for such

programs had been sold out the day prebooking started. The festival got

underway with some practice matches and qualifiers, while its opening ceremony

took place on Saturday evening featuring performances by K-pop idol groups and

a fireworks show.

Choi stressed the importance of linking the festival's sports activities to

tourism assets held by the city in an effort to lure more tourists to the city

known for several man-made lakes. The municipal government has completed such

tourist attractions as a skywalk to get a closer look at a lake in the city, a

hall on toy robots and a village featuring renowned South Korean novelist Kim

You-jeong.

"If visitors not only take part in the festival but also pay visits to these

tourist attractions nearby, Chuncheon will see its tourism activated and get a

new changing image as an international tourist spot. At the end of the day, the

name of the game is to get athletes and general people to visit Chuncheon to

seek leisure and sports activities," Choi said.

About how the mayor will prepare for the next few festivals -- a domestic one

next year and an international one in 2018 -- Choi said, "By judging from the

trends in the leisure industry, and understanding new changes in it, we will

make better preparations for the coming festivals. In the mid and long-term

viewpoints, projects to effectively offer leisure activities and tourism

activities together should be implemented."

The mayor also said, "One of the reasons why we are seeking to make Chuncheon a

top city for leisure and tourism is the city is endowed with the most suitable

natural environment for leisure activities that involve the maritime, land and

airborne fields, as the city is surrounded by lakes, rivers and mountains."

At the time leisure activities are growing to be something indispensable to

everyday life, Chuncheon has high growth potential in the leisure market. "We

hope Chuncheon will be a big player in creating added value by linking tourism

and festivals," he said.

The city expects that it will have more facilities to woo more tourists than

ever to the city after 2018, when Lego Land, a Hello Kitty Theme Park and a

ropeway on Mount Samak will be operational.

"The future vision for Chuncheon is tourism and nature. It's leisure that puts

the two areas together," Choi said.
