東京、2016 年1 月19 日 - 世界的写真家、アニー・リーボヴィッツ氏による新作肖像写真展「WOMEN: New Portraits」が、世界10 都市巡回展の一環として、2016 年2 月20 日より東京TOLOT/heuristic SHINONOME で開 催されます。東京での世界巡回展は、今年日本で設立50 周年を迎えたUBS の記念事業の幕開けとなります。

今回の写真展は、リーボヴィッツ氏が1999 年に出版し絶大なる人気を博した写真集『Women』に端を発したプロ ジェクトの一環となります。このプロジェクトの初期を共同制作したスーザン・ソンタグ氏が、「現在進行形の作品（a work in progress ) 」と表現した作品群です。本写真展「WOMEN: New Portraits」は、リーボヴィッツ氏が巡回展を 開催する世界各地域、都市の女性を撮影し、現代社会における女性の役割、そしてこれからを映し出したもので す。

今週ロンドンで公開された新たな肖像写真群は、アーティスト、ミュージシャン、経営者、政治家、作家、慈善活動 家など、様々な領域で活躍する女性を被写体としています。本写真展では新しく制作された作品の他、プロジェク ト初期のオリジナル作品や未発表の写真も含まれます。

アニー・リーボヴィッツ氏（1949 年生）は、1970 年代初頭にローリング・ストーン誌の写真ジャーナリストとしてキ ャリアをスタートしました。以来ポップ・カルチャーの力強く鮮烈なイメージを写し続けています。1973 年に同誌チ ーフ・フォトグラファーに就任。その10 年後には、ヴァニティ・フェア誌とヴォーグ誌の仕事も手掛けるようになりま した。膨大かつ卓越した作品群には、時代を象徴する肖像写真が多く含まれます。リーボヴィッツ氏の作品はこれ まで、国立肖像画美術館 (National Portrait Gallery, ワシントンD.C.)、国際写真センター（International Center of

'WOMEN: New Portraits' by Annie Leibovitz to Launch in Japan in February

public on 20 February 2016 at TOLOT/heuristic SHINONOME in Tokyo. Access to the

    'WOMEN: New Portraits,' an exhibition of newly commissioned photographs by

renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz, will open to the public in Tokyo on

February 20, 2016 at TOLOT/heuristic SHINONOME, as part of a 10-city global

tour. The opening of the exhibition in Tokyo kicks off UBS's year-long

celebration of its 50th anniversary of establishing operations in Japan.

    Leibovitz's new work is a continuation of a project that began over fifteen

years ago when her most enduringly popular series of photographs, 'Women,' was

published in 1999. Susan Sontag, with whom the original project was a

collaboration, called it "a work in progress." 'WOMEN: New Portraits' will

reflect the changes in the roles of women today and evolve over the coming year

as Leibovitz photographs women in each of the host cities and regions.

    The new portraits unveiled in London today feature women of outstanding

achievement including artists, musicians, CEOs, politicians, writers and

philanthropists. In addition to the new photographs, the exhibition includes

work from the original series, as well as other unpublished photographs taken

since.

    Annie Leibovitz said: "It is extraordinary to do this work for UBS on a

subject that I really care about. It is such a big undertaking and a broad

subject, it is like going out and photographing the ocean."

    Aligned with the focus UBS places on education, a series of free learning

programs will accompany the exhibition, presented in partnership with cultural

organizations around the world. These initiatives will explore ways of seeing

through photography, working with young people in local schools and

communities. A Teachers' Guide produced in partnership with the International

Center of Photography in New York and a Children's Activity Guide are available

to teachers and the public on the exhibition website.

    Annie Leibovitz (b. 1949) has been making powerful images documenting

popular culture since the early 1970s, when she began working as a

photojournalist for Rolling Stone. She became the magazine's chief photographer

in 1973, and ten years later began working for Vanity Fair and then Vogue. Her

large and distinguished body of work encompasses some of the best-known

portraits of our time. Exhibitions of Leibovitz's work have been shown at

museums and galleries around the world, including the National Portrait Gallery

in Washington, D.C.; the International Center of Photography in New York; the

Brooklyn Museum; the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam; the National Portrait

Gallery in London; and the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Her work is held in museum collections from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New

York; and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C. to the National

Portrait Gallery in London. She has published several collections of

photographs and is the recipient of many honors. In 2006 she was made a

'Commandeur' in the 'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres' by the French government.

In 2009, she received the International Center of Photography's Lifetime

Achievement Award, the first Creative Excellence Award from the American

Society of Magazine Editors, and the Centenary Medal of the Royal Photographic

Society in London. In 2012, she was the recipient of the Los Angeles Museum of

Contemporary Art Award to Distinguished Women in the Arts and the Wexner Prize.

In 2013 she received the Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and

Humanities. She has been designated a Living Legend by the U.S. Library of

Congress.

    A set of the new photographs will enter the UBS Art Collection - one of the

world's most important corporate collections of contemporary art, comprising

more than 30,000 objects.
