Shiseido and RepliCel at the Leading Edge of the Next Wave of Regenerative Medicine Innovation in Japan and Canada
PR59744
TOKYO, Mar. 11, 2015 /PRN=KYODO JBN/ --
-- Japanese policy changes create enthusiasm among foreign
and domestic companies to bring cell therapies to Japanese consumers
RepliCel Life Sciences Inc. (OTCQB: REPCF) (TSX.V: RP), a clinical stage
regenerative medicine company focused on the development of autologous cell
therapies, today announced coverage in Canada's National Post
(http://business.financialpost.com/2015/03/10/seeking-to-cure-the-incurable/ )
highlighting Canada and Japan's leadership in developing a domestic and global
regenerative medicine industry. Both Shiseido Company, Limited and RepliCel
Life Sciences are cited as examples of the potential for this leadership to
translate into new industry and therapies within their borders. RepliCel and
Shiseido are two of a handful of companies taking advantage of Japan's
regulatory innovation enabling earlier market access for cell therapies proven
safe and potentially curative of incurable conditions.
"The regenerative medicine and cell therapy field is changing rapidly around
the world," says Michael May, Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for
Commercialization of Regenerative Medicine (CCRM) in downtown Toronto. "What is
happening in Japan is one example of how momentum is building in this industry.
A key component of Japan's strategy is changing the regulatory policy around
the oversight, approval, clinical development and manufacturing processes
related to cell-based therapies. For those in the industry, this is a leading
initiative that promises to dramatically change the global regenerative
medicine landscape," May says.
"The international race for regenerative medicine leadership is on, and
Japan is leading the way with respect to regulatory innovation. RepliCel has
already partnered with Shiseido Company and now looks towards other
partnerships in Japan for its fibroblast program," stated David Hall,
RepliCel's CEO.
In the National Post article Mr. Youichi Shimatani, Shiseido's chief
Corporate Officer for Research and Development comments, "Creating beauty in
everyday life is the mission of Shiseido. To alleviate suffering of people
with alopecia, we have dedicated many years to hair research. Using the
knowledge and technologies acquired from our research activities, Shiseido is
currently preparing to launch an RCH-01 clinical research study for the
treatment of pattern baldness under the supervision of key clinical opinion
leaders of hair research in Japan."
Shinchi Muto, Chief Japan Representative for Euro Pacific Canada, Inc. is
quoted saying, "Japan is looking to establish leadership in the regenerative
medicine industry by encouraging domestic innovation and enticing foreign
companies to develop products in Japan by bringing foreign therapeutics to the
Japanese market. The mission of our nation's leadership is to pave the way for
real, practical, breakthroughs in regenerative medicine." The Tokyo-based
office of Euro Pacific Canada, the article states, is actively working with
companies outside Japan, like RepliCel Life Sciences and others, to build
three-way partnerships between Japanese investors, strategic partners and
therapeutic developers.
The National Post article also emphasizes Canada's strategies in play around
regenerative medicine that will benefit immensely in light of Japan's
initiatives. Canada's Centre for Commercialization of Regenerative Medicine
(CCRM) is playing a key role in commercializing the wealth of regenerative
medicine science and intellectual property available in Canada. This is being
achieved either by establishing new companies or finding partners to develop
technologies on their behalf. Since its inception in 2011, CCRM has created a
formal industry consortium of more than 40 companies from around the world
including Vancouver-based RepliCel.
RepliCel was one of the first cell therapy companies in the world to execute
a licensing and commercialization agreement with a Japanese industry partner to
leverage the rapidly emerging opportunity around regenerative medicine in
Japan. In 2013, RepliCel partnered with Shiseido Company for commercialization
of its autologous cell therapy, produced using cells harvested from the
patient's own hair follicles to treat pattern baldness. The agreement granted
an exclusive license for RepliCel's most advanced product, RCH-01, to Shiseido
for certain Asian countries.
As one of the few foreign cell therapy companies with a Japanese partner,
and one of an even smaller group with an active manufacturing footprint in
Japan, RepliCel is ready to take advantage of Japan's new regulations and is
excited to start its first Japan-based clinical trial with its licensing
partner, Shiseido.
In addition to its partnership with Shiseido, RepliCel is also actively
engaged with investors and potential partners to establish similar partnerships
for its other products in its pipeline including a cellular treatment for
tendon repair and skin rejuvenation, as well as other applications. In
addition to its cell therapies, RepliCel is developing a propriety injection
device optimized for the administration of its products and licensable for use
with other dermatology applications.
Representatives of RepliCel's management and R&D teams will be in Japan from
March 18-25 presenting with Shiseido at the Congress of the Japanese Society
for Regenerative Medicine 2015 in Yokohama, and at the 12th Annual BioAsia
International Conference in Tokyo. They will also be conducting closed-door
meetings with its partner Shiseido and the Japanese Pharmaceutical and Medical
Devices Agency (PMDA), as well as numerous potential investors and strategic
partners with the support of the Tokyo-based office of Euro Pacific Canada
which is supporting RepliCel's partnering activity in Japan.
