世界各地で学習方法がテクノロジーによりどう変革するかを探求
世界の教育における革新と連携を推進する国際的イニシアチブである国際教育改革サミット（World Innovation Summit for Education、以下 WISE）は、WISEブックの3作目となる “Learning {Re}imagined: How the connected society is transforming learning” の出版を発表しました。“Learning {Re}imagined”は、Education Design Labsの創立者グラハム・ブラウン-マーチン氏（Graham Brown-Martin）によって執筆され、数々の国際的な賞の受賞歴を持つ写真家ニューシャ・タバコリアン氏（Newsha Tavakolian）の写真と共に、デジタル技術によってつながったコネクテッド社会において、人々の学習方法がどのように変わろうとしているかを探究しています。

本書の刊行に際し、WISE議長のアブドゥッラー・ビン・アリ・アール・サーニ博士は、「WISEブックは、世界の多様な環境の中で、今日の教育に突き付けられたさまざまなレベルの課題を取り上げ、世界各国の最も革新的なアプローチを紹介し、独自の視点を提供しています。WISEブックによって、教育界の最新の思想や、クリエイティブな活動モデルが幅広く周知されることを期待しています。」と述べています。
今回の新刊では、著者と写真家がブラジル、中国、ガーナ、インド、ヨルダン、レバノン、カタール、シンガポール、アラブ首長国連邦、英国、米国を訪れ、現地の学校やプロジェクトで教育関係者や各界リーダーの取材を実施し、インターネットで繋がるようになった社会における教育の内容や指導方法に関して現場の教師が直面する課題を探っています。さらにテクノロジーを手掛かりに、それぞれの国で社会がどのように形成され、教育がそこでどのような役割を担っているのか、今後想定されるさらに大きな課題に対応するために、どのような変革が求められているのかといった幅広いテーマまで踏み込んでいます。
本書で特に強調されているのが、最新のテクノロジー技術を最大限に活用できる方法を見出す上で、人的要素の果たす重要性です。著者のグラハム・ブラウン-マーチン氏は、「教育におけるテクノロジー活用についての議論を深め、単に成功事例を紹介するだけでなく、教育現場で実際に何が機能し何が障害になっているのかを把握して、それを改めて教育現場に伝えていくことが私たちの使命だと考えています」と述べています。
また、本書にカメラマンとして参加したニューシャ・タバコリアン氏は、「テクノロジーによって間違いなく、新たなチャンスが無数に切り拓かれ、多くの人たちが豊富な情報やリソースに触れることができるようになりました。しかし、教育の変革はテクノロジーだけによってもたらされたものではなく、テクノロジーはその一部に過ぎません。ファインダーを通して、人間同士の交流がいかに教育に大きな影響を与えているかを再実感しました」と述べています。

The World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE), a leading international
initiative driving innovation and collaboration in education, has announced the
publication of the third WISE Book, Learning {Re}imagined: How the Connected
Society is Transforming Learning. Written by Graham Brown-Martin, Founder of
Education Design Labs, and illustrated with images by award-winning
photographer Newsha Tavakolian, this third WISE Book explores how the digitally
connected society is transforming learning.

This WISE Book has taken the author and photographer on a world tour -to
Brazil, China, Ghana, India, Jordan, Lebanon, Qatar, Singapore, the United Arab
Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States. They visit school and
projects, and meet with educators and thought leaders. The book explores how
today's educators are facing the challenge of what to teach and how to teach in
a connected society. Using technology as a touchstone, the journey leads to a
wider exploration of why societies are shaped as they are, the role of
education systems within them, and how they may transform to meet tomorrow's
big challenges.
Highlighting the importance of the human element in knowing how to make
best use of advancing technologies, Graham Brown-Martin comments, "Our mission
is to get under the skin of the debate around technology in education to
understand and report back on what is working and what are the obstacles as
well as the triumphs."
Photographer Newsha Tavakolian adds, "Technology has certainly opened up so
many opportunities, giving access to a wealth of information and resources for
so many. But technology is not the only thing that has changed education, and
certainly not the whole story. For me it was important to also capture the
power of human interactions."
