Joint Commission International to Host Health Care Practicum in Tokyo

PR56943

OAK BROOK, Ill., June 5, 2014 /PRN=KYODO JBN/ --

    Faculty from Joint Commission International

    (http://ja.jointcommissioninternational.org/) (JCI) will host an

International Practicum on Accreditation and Quality Improvement for hospital

and academic medical center leaders, the first event of its kind held in Japan.

The five-day program will take place in Tokyo from 28 July to 1 August (

http://ja.jointcommissioninternational.org/tokyo-international-practicum/ ),

with presentations in English and Japanese.

    Logo - http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130429/DC02732LOGO

The practicum is JCI's most comprehensive educational program for

unaccredited health care organizations that are considering accreditation or

preparing for an initial survey. The event will showcase useful practices and

knowledge that attendees need to succeed to become JCI-accredited organizations

and achieve JCI's Gold Seal of Approval(R).

Presenters will explain JCI's rigorous standards for patient care and

safety and the process to achieve compliance. To see the survey process in

action, attendees will follow a JCI expert on simulated tracers through St.

Luke's International Hospital (http://www.luke.or.jp/), Tokyo, a JCI-accredited

hospital under the leadership of President Tsuguya Fukui, MD, PhD. Practicum

courses focus on achieving compliance with JCI's Accreditation Standards for

Hospitals, 5th edition (

http://ja.jointcommissioninternational.org/jci-accreditation-standards-for-hospitals-5th-edition/

), released in 2013 and soon available in Japanese. The updated hospital manual

features standards of particular interest to academic medical centers, such as

medical professional education and human subject research.

Kameda Medical Center (http://www.kameda.com/), Kamogawa City, became the

first hospital in Japan to achieve JCI accreditation in 2009 and was

reaccredited in 2012. Japan Hospital Association (https://www.hospital.or.jp/)

(JHA) supports the practicum to help health care professionals prepare for

accreditation.

"JCI accreditation is considered the gold standard in global health care.

In Japan eight hospitals have been accredited and many hospitals are seeking

accreditation. It is essential to know the JCI process, JCI evaluation methods,

quality improvement strategies, and the challenging standards," said Tsuneo

Sakai, MD, president of JHA and a member of JCI's Asia-Pacific Regional

Advisory Council.

"Because JCI accreditation is a never-ending journey, not an end point,

staff participation in JCI's Practicums and Accreditation Update seminars is

essential. Understanding JCI's global approach to continuous quality

improvement and patient safety was a valuable investment that led our

organizational culture to become better," said Takaaki Kameda, MD, PhD,

chairman of the board, Kameda Group, and CEO, Kameda Medical Center.

JCI operates an Asia-Pacific office to provide support to health care

organizations in the region and recently released a Japanese version of its

website (http://ja.jointcommissioninternational.org/). "JCI has been conducting

successful practicums around the world for years. We are excited to bring this

leading-edge content to Japan in response to increased local interest in JCI

accreditation. As more Japanese hospitals and academic medical centers seek to

earn JCI's prestigious Gold Seal of Approval, our staff is well positioned to

provide the service and education they require to become recognized quality and

safety champions," notes Paul Chang, MD, vice president, Accreditation,

Standards, and Measurement, JCI.

To register for JCI's Tokyo Practicum, visit the JCI website

Simultaneous interpretation in Japanese offered to all attendees.

Joint Commission International(R) (JCI) was established in 1994 as a

division of Joint Commission Resources, Inc.(R), a wholly controlled,

not-for-profit affiliate of The Joint Commission(R). Through international

accreditation, advisory services, publications, and education programs, JCI

extends The Joint Commission's mission worldwide by helping to improve the

quality of patient care. JCI assists international health care organizations,

public health agencies, health ministries, and others in more than 100

countries.
