佐藤琢磨、最速ドライバーの一人としてインディ500に参戦

米国カリフォルニア州アーバイン（2014 年 5 月 22 日）全てのレースにて果敢に挑戦を続ける佐藤琢磨は、5月25日に開催されるインディ500に向け、さらに意欲を燃やしています。A.J.フォイト・ABCサプライの車体番号14番マシンを駆るこの日本人ドライバーの座右の銘は「No Attack, No Chance!」。F1参戦経験を持ち、F3チャンピオンに輝き、そして昨年のインディカー・シリーズ、ロングビーチ戦では優勝を飾るなど、経験豊富な琢磨選手は、今季のインディカー・シリーズにて好調な滑り出しを見せており、功績とは、強い信念と厳しい鍛錬を重ねることによってのみ得るものである、ということを自ら証明しています。

今年の第98回インディ500において、琢磨選手は故国日本への思いと被災地支援のため、特別にデザインしたヘルメットでレースに挑みます。このスペシャル・ヘルメットはインディ500レース終了後に琢磨選手がサインをし、eBayのオークションに出品、その収益は彼自身が立ち上げた「With You Japan」に寄付され、2011年に起きた東日本大震災で被災した子供たちの長期支援に役立てられます。このヘルメットには、車体番号である「14」と日本の国旗、そしてチームオーナーのA.J.フォイトがインディ500で挙げた勝ち星を表す「4つの星」が赤・白・青の3色でデザインされています。

ここ1週間で精力的にプラクティスに挑んだ琢磨選手。5月16日に行われたファスト・フライデーは雨に見舞われたものの、前向きの姿勢を崩さず、最速227.241 mphを記録、15番手につけました。5月18日、インディアナポリス・モーター・スピードウェイで行われた予選2日目には合計4ラップをこなし、平均速度229.201 mphを記録しました。

彼はアグレッシブなドライビングスタイルで知られており、インディカー・シリーズ3年目となった2012年のインディ500にて、ゴール手前3.2キロ地点にて壮絶な優勝争いを展開、世界の注目を浴びました。一躍ファンの話題をさらった果敢な走りから2年たちましたが、その勢いは衰えず、今回もレース制覇を目指したアグレッシブな走行展開が期待されます。

Takuma Sato Qualifies Among the Fastest for the 2014 Indy 500 Race

    Takuma Sato, who aggressively attacks each race he competes in, is again

hard at work as he prepares to race in the Indy 500 on May 25th.  Driving the

No. 14 with A.J Foyt's ABC Supply team, the Japanese driver firmly believes in

his philosophy "No Attack, No Chance!" Sato started out the season with much

success, proving that the combination of a wise philosophy and focused

discipline can only mean great things for the earlier IndyCar Long Beach

Champion, F3 Champion and F1 Driver.

    Takuma will be wearing a specially designed helmet during the Indy 500 race

as part of his charitable fundraising efforts and tribute to Japan, his country

of birth. The helmet will be autographed and offered to the public in an eBay

auction and proceeds raised will be donated to the "With you Japan" charity,

founded by Sato himself in 2011 to provide relief to children impacted by the

earthquake and tsunami. The red, white and blue headgear also features Sato's

name, his car number and the Japanese flag. Four white stars on top of the

helmet signify team owner A.J. Foyt's four Indy 500 victories.

    Takuma underwent intensive practice just this past week.  He remained

positive and optimistic despite the unexpected rain on the May 16th Fast Friday

practice and was able to reach a top speed of 227.241 mph, finishing 15th

overall. On the final day of qualifying at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on

May 18th, Sato completed a total of 4 laps with an average speed of 229.201 mph.

    The world-renowned race car driver is known for his aggressive style. In

2012, Takuma's third year competing in the Indy 500 series, he attracted

attention when he made a bold move to overtake the lead only two miles away

from winning the race. Two years after the headline-grabbing controversial

move, he is expected to be just as aggressive in conquering the race.
