ドレイソン卿は大胆なレーシングで「電気自動車地上速度世界記録」を何度か達成し、モータリング革新に貢献したとしてこのほど、ロイヤル・オートモービル・クラブの技術委員会によって権威あるシムズ・メダルが授与された。

今年のシムズ・メダルはドレイソン卿が新しい自動車技術に挑戦し、その技術が持つ可能性を大胆に極限まで追求し、それに成功したとして授与された。技術委員会は、ドレイソン卿は車両重量999キロ以下の電気自動車地上速度の世界記録を4つも樹立し、「冒険魂の良い例になった」としている。

ドレイソン卿が運転したB12 69/EVはQualcomm Haloがスポンサーになり、卿自らの会社Drayson Racing Technologiesが開発したもので、時速205.139マイル（330.139キロ）で走り、国際自動車連盟（FIA）のフライングスタートによる電気自動車地上速度の世界新記録を打ち立てた。ドレイソン卿はまた、すべての動力で動く自動車の英国における地上速度記録を打ち立て、2013年10月にはスタンディングスタートで1/4マイルを9.742秒で走り、世界新記録を打ち立てている。

ドレイソン卿は自らのシムズ・メダル賞受賞について「ロイヤル・オートモービル・クラブからシムズ・メダルを授与されたことを大きな誇りと感じており、電気自動車の持つ性能の可能性を極限環境の下で示すことができて喜んでいる。これもすべて当社と一緒にやろうというビジョンを持ったQualcomm、Multimatic、Cosworth、Michelinのような革新的な会社がパートナーになってくれたから初めて可能になったことだ」と述べた。

ロイヤル・オートモービル・クラブのモータリング委員会委員長ベン・カッソンズ氏は「英国自動車産業界の優れた功績を表彰できて喜んでいる。ロイヤル・オートモービル・クラブの存在理由の1つはいつの時代でもモータリングに関わることすべてを促進することで、現在のような厳しい経済環境にあっては特にそうだ。自動車革新に対する関心を引くことは製造業のなかでも活気に満ちた自動車産業に対してわれわれができる貢献の重要な一部だ」と述べた。

同氏はさらに「ロイヤル・オートモービル・クラブは何十年にもわたってシーグレーブからコッブ、キャンベル、ノーブル、グリーンなど英国人ドライバーによって成し遂げられた地上速度記録を多く表彰してきたが、ドレイソンもこの輝かしいリストに載ることになった。当クラブは今までガソリン、ディーゼル、蒸気、ガスタービンなどを原動力にした車両を使って打ち立てられた地上速度記録を表彰してきたが、この地上速度記録リストに最初の電気自動車を加えることができて喜んでいる」と述べた。

Lord Drayson Awarded the Prestigious Simms Medal by the Royal Automobile Club

Speed Records with revolutionary all-electric B12 69/EV

    - Simms Medal ceremony held at Pall Mall Clubhouse yesterday afternoon

recognising innovation and personal endeavour contributing to the automotive

industry

    Lord Drayson has been awarded the prestigious Simms Medal by the Royal

Automobile Club's Technical Committee in recognition of his contribution to

motoring innovation after his audacious and successful World Electric Land

Speed Record runs.

    This year's Simms Medal recognises Lord Drayson for championing new

automotive technologies, and daring - very successfully - to go out and

demonstrate their potential in the most extreme manner. The Technical Committee

felt that Lord Drayson "exemplified the spirit of adventure" while setting four

Electric Land Speed Records for sub-999kg vehicles.

    Lord Drayson drove the Qualcomm Halo-sponsored B12 69/EV developed by his

company Drayson Racing Technologies to set a new flying mile FIA World Electric

Land Speed record for the category at 205.139 mph. He also set a British Land

Speed Record for cars of any propulsion type driven by their wheels and a new

standing start quarter mile world record of 9.742 seconds in October 2013.

    Commenting on his Simms Medal award, Lord Drayson said: "I'm very proud to

have been awarded the Simms Medal by the Royal Automobile Club and I'm

delighted we've been able to demonstrate the potential of EV performance in the

most extreme environment. None of this would have been possible without our

    Ben Cussons, Chairman Motoring Committee of the Royal Automobile Club,

Record to this list."
