【ソウル2013年10月17日PRN＝共同JBN】韓国最大の全国多種目スポーツ競技大会が今週末、ソウル西方の大都市、仁川広域市で開催の運びとなるが、同市はこの機会を来年にホスト役を務める、より大規模な国際スポーツ大会への試金石として活用したいと願っている。

ソウルの西約40キロに位置し、人口290万人の仁川市は19日に開幕し、24日まで続く「第94回全国体育大会」（韓国の国体）を開催する。

大会組織当局によると、2万2000人のスポーツ選手と8000人の運営役員がこの人口で韓国第3位の都市に集まり、44種目のメダル対象競技と2つの模範演技を繰り広げる。

また、仁川市は来年秋、2014年アジア競技大会の開催地となるが、この4年に一度の大会のホストを務めるのは韓国の都市として3つ目。仁川広域市の宋永吉市長は「全国体育大会」の組織委員長を兼務するが、仁川市にとって今回の全国的イベントがアジア大会の成功の基礎づくりに役立つと語った。

宋市長は先に聯合通信とのインタビューで「わが市が全国体育大会のホストを務めるのは14年ぶりだが、まさにわが市が世界的なハブに発展しようとしている時期に当たる。より重要なことは大会がアジア競技大会を1年先に見据えて開催されることであると思う。わが市のインフラと運営システムをテストする絶好の機会である」と語っている。

宋市長はさらに、この全国的イベントが「仁川市の可能性と向上した地位を紹介するショーウインドーになるだろう」として、「競技大会とは別して、わが市は訪問者のために多彩なアトラクションを提供するだろう。たくさんの人々が来訪して、仁川市を楽しんでいただくことを望んでいる」と述べた。

宋市長は全国体育大会の集客数が約92万人と予測されると述べた。19日から20日にかけて開催される「世界食文化祭り」（World Food Culture Fair）など一連の文化的行事が競技を並行して開催されると説明した。

仁川市は開催都市として46種目全部に参加する選手1302人と運営役員328人を送り込む。同市長は仁川市代表選手団が幾つものメダルを掲示板に載せ、総合順位3位までに食い込むことを期待すると述べた。

仁川市の全国体育大会での最高位は前回、ホスト役を務めた1999年の第3位であった。

今年、仁川市選手団はオリンピック大会で4回、メダリストに輝いた朴泰恒選手を団長とする。同選手は競泳5種目にエントリーしている。

昨年のロンドン・オリンピックでのスター選手としては、体操競技の跳馬（男子）で金メダルの梁鶴善選手、アーチェリー（女子）で金メダル2個の奇甫倍選手、フェンシング・エぺ種目（女子）の銀メダリスト、申アラムが全国体育大会に参戦する。

Nat'l Multisport Competition to Kick Off in Incheon on Weekend

The largest national multisport competition is set to kick off this weekend in

Incheon, a metropolitan city located west of Seoul, which hopes to use this

occasion as a test for a larger international competition it will host next

year.

Incheon, 40 kilometers west of Seoul with a population of 2.9 million, will

stage the 94th annual National Sports Festival starting this Saturday. The

event will go on until Oct. 24.

According to the event organizers, 22,000 athletes and 8,000 officials will

descend on the third most-populated city in the country, competing in 44 medal

sports and two demonstration sports.

Incheon will also serve as the host of the 2014 Asian Games next September, as

the third South Korean city to host the quadrennial continental event. Song

Young-gil, mayor of Incheon doubling as the chief organizer of the National

Sports Festival, has said the national event will help the city lay the

foundation for a successful Asian Games.

"We're hosting the National Sports Festival for the first time in 14 years, at

a time when we're developing into a global hub," Song told Yonhap News Agency

in an earlier interview. "I think it's more significant that this is taking

place with the Asian Games one year away. It will give us a good opportunity to

test our infrastructure and operating systems."

Song also said the national event will "showcase Incheon's potential and

elevated status."

"Aside from the competitions, we will offer plenty of other attractions for

visitors," the mayor said. "We hope that many people will come and enjoy

themselves in Incheon."

Song said about 920,000 people are expected to attend the National Sports

Festival. He said a series of cultural events, including the World Food Culture

Fair from Friday to Sunday, will be held on the sidelines of the sports

competition.

The host Incheon will send its largest delegation ever, with 1,302 athletes and

328 officials in all 46 events. The mayor is counting on Incheon athletes put

up some medals on board and crack the top three in the standings.

Incheon's highest-finish at a National Sports Festival was a third-place

showing in 1999, the last time it served as the host.

The city this year will be led by swimmer Park Tae-hwan, a four-time Olympic

medalist. He will enter five races in the pool.

Among other stars from last year's London Olympics, Yang Hak-seon, gold

medalist in men's vault in artistic gymnastics, Ki Bo-bae, double gold medalist

in women's archery, and Shin A-lam, silver medal winner in women's epee

fencing, will also compete at the National Sports Festival.
