水原市は首都ソウル市の南30キロに位置し、2013年9月1日から30日まで「EcoMobility World Festival 2013」を主催する。このフェスティバルでは、世界中から最新のエコ・フレンドリーなモバイルビークルと技術が一堂に会する。

市当局によると、フェスティバル開催のため水原市中心部の古い道路や公共施設の改修に130億ウォン（約1150万米ドル）が投じられた。

市内の道路はさらにエコフレンドリーな環境を作り出すため、すっきりするよう電線の張り直しや街路樹の整理を行い、特にフェスティバル期間中ビジターや地元住民がエコモバイル・ビークルを試乗する場所の周辺は念入りに整理された、と市当局者は語っている。

地元経済界もさまざまな取り組みを行っている。フェスティバルの余興にビジターが楽しめるよう伝統的な市場、クラフトワークショップ、歌唱コンクールなどさまざまなイベントを計画されている。

水原市はプリンティングとクラフトショップでよく知られており、さらに多くの観光客の求めに応じられるよう新製品やおみやげを大量に用意している。

地元経済にとってフェスティバル開催による生き生きした雰囲気は、歓迎すべきニュースである。地元経済は、水原市にあるユネスコ世界遺産の華城に対する政府規制で、何年にもわたり沈滞気味だった。

フェスティバル組織委員会関係者は、水原市としてこのフェスティバルを機会に持続可能な開発のリーダーとして宣伝したいと述べている。同市は2030年までに二酸化炭素排出量の40%削減を目標にしている。

Suwon City Gets Ready for World's First Ecomobility Festival

    With the countdown to the world's first ecomobility festival underway, the

South Korean city of Suwon is making last-minute preparations to greet visitors

from home and abroad, officials said Thursday.

    The city, located 30 kilometers south of Seoul, is hosting the EcoMobility

World Festival 2013 from Sept. 1-30, which will bring together the latest

eco-friendly mobile vehicles and technologies from around the globe.

    It has invested 13 billion won (US$11.5 million) to refurnish outdated

roads, buildings and public facilities in the downtown area to better fit the

festival's theme of "green city of the future", according to officials.

  Streets have been streamlined with reinstalled hydro wires and roadside trees

to create a more eco-friendly atmosphere, especially around designated sites

where ecomobile vehicles will be test run by visitors and local residents

during the event, they said.

    Local businesses are taking various initiatives, too. They are organizing a

wide range of events such as traditional markets, craft workshops and singing

contests that visitors can enjoy on the sidelines of the festival.

    Printing and crafts shops, which the region is originally well-known for,

are churning out new pieces and souvenirs, expecting to meet wider tourist

demands.

    The lively atmosphere that comes with the festival is welcome news to the

local economy, which has stagnated over the years due to government regulations

imposed on it as the area sits inside the Hwaseong Fortress, a UNESCO World

Heritage site.

    Suwon City is hoping to promote itself as a leader of sustainable

development through this event, organizers for the festival said. It has set a

40 percent reduction target on its carbon emission by 2030.

    "With this festival, we will work together to show what an ecomobile city

looks like and deliver the message that this new urban lifestyle is possible,"

Suwon Mayor Yeom Tae-young said in a statement.
