MakiBiz Request for Proposal Winners Announced

PR53840

ISHINOMAKI, Japan, July 31, 2013 /PRN=KYODO JBN/ --

In April 2013, MakiBiz (American Non-Profit Organization, Architecture for

Humanity's Japan Regional Office located in Ishinomaki, Japan) launched a

program to support small businesses and entrepreneurs affected by the 2011

Great East Japan Earthquake.  After a four-month search and interview process,

8 businesses were chosen, with a total of 48,000,000 yen committed towards

supporting their reconstruction.

Principal support was provided by The Prudential Foundation.

In response to MakiBiz's outreach efforts, nearly 40 applications were

received from the prefectures of Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima.  After careful

consideration by third-party judges, 8 businesses were chosen under criteria

such as: the level of damage received due to the tsunami; projected future

growth; and the role played in the business' community as a whole, including

future employment plans and accessibility to the public.

Two businesses in Iwate prefecture and six businesses in Miyagi prefecture

were chosen, and support will go towards a portion of construction costs needed

to build and rebuild factory and office spaces.

Grant recipients include an ironworks factory, a bus tourism company, an

oyster farming business, a Japanese confectionery, a washi (Japanese paper)

making business, an electronics business specializing in boats, and a marine

processing business - all of which were devastated by the March 11, 2011,

earthquake and tsunami.

MakiBiz has also been providing pro bono architectural and business advice

to small and medium businesses looking to work towards growing their business

in areas affected by the disaster.

To revive the city's economy and raise employment rates, the recovery of

small and medium enterprises is crucial.  Many businesses don't qualify for

governmental support, and those that do often receive insufficient help.

MakiBiz is working to find ways to support these businesses beyond this RFP

program - financially, as well as with reconstruction and business planning.
