英ハンプシャー州ラバーストーク・ミルのボンベイ・サファイア（BOMBAY SAPPHIRE、登録商標）ジン蒸留酒製造所の蒸留プロセス・ビルはこのほどBREEAM（英国建築研究所による建築の環境性能評価手法）によって「とても素晴らしい（Outstanding）」という設計段階の認証（注1）を受けた初めての蒸留所になり、また初めての改装ビルにもなった。

BREEAMは世界を代表する建物の環境評価方式で、最も広く使われている。持続可能な設計のベスト・プラクティスの基準になっており、個々の建物の環境性能を表すための測定方法になっている。設計段階における認証を得るためには、すべてのプロジェクトは一連の環境尺度を使ったアセスメントを受けるが、それらの尺度は経営、健康、福利、エネルギー、輸送、水、材料、廃棄物、土地使用およびエコロジー、環境汚染、革新などにグループ分けされている。

ラバーストーク・ミル製造所の蒸留酒製造プロセス・ビルに与えられた設計認証「とても素晴らしい」は建物の完成時に確認作業を受け、最終的な認証書が授与される。これらのビルは最高レベルの建物の持続可能性を達成しており、世界で最も環境にやさしい蒸留酒製造所の1つになると考えられている。完成後の蒸留酒製造所は炭素排出量で60%程度の削減をみることになるが、これは建物規制によって求められる数値よりも85%近くも改善されたものになる。

ボンベイ・サファイア蒸留酒製造所プロセス・ビルに与えられた86.81%の優れたスコアは今までBREEAMによって認証された工業用の建物の中で2番目に高いスコアになる。この結果は蒸留酒製造所の設計に組み込まれたいくつかの独自技術のたまものであり、その中には同サイト内を流れるテスト川の発電（注2）が含まれるが、これは太陽光発電、バイオ燃料ボイラー、6kW水力発電水車サイトなどサイト内の再生可能エネルギー・ジェネレーティングシステムを組み合せたものになっている。

結果として炭素排出量の削減が達成されたが、このことはこれらサイト内の建物の中にはビクトリア朝ミル型建築などを復旧、改装したものも含んでおり、特にその中には学術研究上重要地域（SSSI）（注3）の中で、第2種指定建造物（英国の法律により特に重要で、学術上の意義もあり、保護すべきとの指定）にリストアップされていることを考えると意義深い。

     Site named as one of world's most sustainable distilleries ahead of

opening in Autumn 2013, creating a sustainable site to continue to produce a

perfectly balanced premium gin

    The BOMBAY SAPPHIRE(R) gin distillery at Laverstoke Mill in Hampshire has

become both the first distillery and first refurbishment to achieve an

'Outstanding' design-stage BREEAM (Building Research Establishment's

Environmental Assessment Method) accreditation[1 ] for its distillery process

buildings.

    BREEAM is the world's leading and most widely used environmental assessment

method for buildings. It sets the standard for best practice in sustainable

design and has become the measurement used to describe a building's

environmental performance. To achieve this design-stage accreditation, the

project is assessed using a system of environmental measures grouped by

management, health and well-being, energy, transport, water, materials, waste,

land use and ecology, pollution, and innovation.

    The 'Outstanding' design-stage rating given to the distillery process

buildings at Laverstoke Mill will be validated upon completion when the final

certification will be awarded. The buildings have achieved the highest level of

sustainable construction, and are expected to be one of the most

environmentally friendly distilleries in the world. The completed distillery

will see a 60% reduction in carbon emissions and nearly an 85% improvement over

what is required by building regulations.

    The Bombay Sapphire distillery process buildings have been awarded an

excellent score of 86.81%, the second highest score awarded to an industrial

building by BREEAM. This is as a result of a number of specific technologies

incorporated into the distillery's design, including power generation from the

River Test which flows through the site[2], the installation of a combination

of on-site renewable energy generating systems, such as photovoltaics, a

bio-fuelled boiler and 6kW hydro-electric water wheel.

    The resulting reduction in carbon emissions is particularly striking given

that buildings at the site include restored and refurbished Victorian Mill

buildings, some of which are Grade II listed (designated as being particularly

important and of special interest and protected by UK law), within a

Conservation Area and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)[3].
